In short, "Amy's World" is a deckbuilding card & dice adventure game with a focus on exploration and narrative. No fighting, but puzzles!

This is in early development!

  • The "Grassland" area serves as a gameplay tutorial. This is quite outdated by now, so definitely look at the other map (see below) to get a better impression of the current state of the game.
  • The other available map ("Abandoned City" near the swamps) is where I am currently working out quest structure and visuals.
  • Check out my Youtube channel for regular devlog videos: https://www.youtube.com/@ScruffyOwlGames

I will be iterating on the game mechanics for a while, too.

Note: In recent versions of Firefox, I encountered issues with the embedded web player and music playback. Try a different browser.

The in-game tutorial should be enough to get you going, but here are some instructions anyway:

Controls:

  • Playing full screen is recommened (the button in the bottom right corner).
  • Played exclusively with the mouse.
  • Move Amy around the map by clicking on nearby intersections and roads.
  • Encounters may start automatically (when placed on the road), or by clicking on the icon (when placed near the road).
  • To restart at any point, reload the browser page.

Player cards:

Player cards represent "tools"  - Amy is a mechanic, after all! They can either be used to fix, or to destroy stuff. The card game view pops up when you run into an encounter marked with a gear icon.

The player's hand cards represent

  • a tool you're wielding - in the beginning, all you have are your bare hands!
  • a skill, which allows you to tweak your dice roll results. As you gain XP while progressing through the level, you learn more skills.

During the game, tool cards can be found, and traded.

  • Cards have 1 or 2 "effect categories" or "abilities" that can be used in challenges. E.g. your bare hand has "move" and "blunt force" icons of strength "x1".
  • Once you find the wrench, you will see it has higher multiplers: Tools have a stronger effect than your bare hands!
  • Before you roll the dice, you can open the "toolbox", to wield any of your collected tool cards.

Roll the dice - oh no, the values are hidden!

  • Click on a die to reveal its value.
  • Watch the "unused dice" limit bar  below the dice area!
    • Exceeding the limit lets you lose the turn.
    • Revealing a die adds the value to the bar.
    • Use a die (place it on a card) to subtract its value from the bar.
  • Matching the limit exactly with all 3 dice awards a bonus.
  • Drag any revealed dice onto the fields of the card you want to use.
    • Cards regularly pose conditions on the dice that can be placed on it.
    • Use the skill cards to modify dice values until they can be placed.
  • Using a tool card costs you energy - watch the health bar!

Challenge cards:

The encounter you need to overcome is represented by a card. It will have one or two icons on the right, representing the abilities that can be applied to solve the challenge.

  • Playing a player card with a matching icon reduces the value of the corresponding icon on the challenge card. Bring one value down to zero to win the challenge!

Rounds and events:

When you don't beat the challenge with one roll of the dice, or you press "End turn", another round is started. At the end of each round, a random event may occur - this is usually nothing good, so try to minimize the number of rounds!

Events may have a chance effect on the outcome of the next turn - e.g. the tool being less efficient.

Leaving a challenge:

Your current set of cards might not be adequate to overcome a challenge. You can press "Leave" to exit the challenge.

Puzzle view:

The final encounter in the game is different - you use the cards to solve a board puzzle!

  • As in a challenge, you need a tool card matching the puzzle's requirements. The puzzle view's icons indicate what you need.
  • A puzzle may require an additional "resource card" (such as the oil can in the tutorial). When you own a matching resource card, it is automatically added to the hand.
  • The goal is to connect all pipes, with no open ends.
  • Placing a die on the tool card gains you "movement points" - each point corresponding to one move of a puzzle piece.
  • Use the mouse to rotate or swap the puzzle pieces, using up movement points.
  • You lose energy when all points on a card are used up, not per move.

Some puzzle pieces may be "rusty" and cannot be moved. You need the oil can resource card to solve this!

  • Place a die on the oil can card
  • Drag from the card onto a rusty puzzle piece to unblock it.
  • An oiled puzzle piece has free rotations as a bonus!

Example: A solution for this puzzle:

... looks like this:

The Future - coming up soon

  • different areas to travel to, (partly) procedurally generated
  • narrative - underlying lore
  • variations of the puzzle mechanics
  • cards, cards, more cards
  • more interesting events at the end of a turn
  • ... and of course improving sound, graphics, gameplay all the time. Stay tuned!
